In order to ensure the future supply of a growing world population with progressive climate change, it is necessary to increase land productivity in agriculture. At the same time, it should be a sustainable low-cost management that promotes biodiversity, provides ecosystem services such as clean water or erosion control. Although the importance of ecologically sustainable organic agriculture is often mentioned in this context, the land productivity of ecological cultivation is so far less than that in conventional cultivation. The use of biochar as carrier for organic manure is particularly important here and can help to overcome this dilemma. At present, there is no process available to produce biochar decentralized, cost-effective and with low plant approval costs. Within the framework of this research project, a reactor for the production of biochar will be developed, which is able to produce biochar directly at the final step on site at economic conditions and without complicated approval processes. The aim is to research and apply the so-called direct pyrolysis in connection with the industrial production of biochar. The essential thing is to design the production process in such a way that the physical, chemical and biological properties of the biochar enable a maximum of nutrient storage and maximize operational benefits. This should be done through scientific support from Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg and Hochschule Geisenheim University.
