New meta-study on “Highly Flexible Biogas Power Plants” goes online

On Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 9:40 a.m., a new meta-study by the Chair of Energy Process Engineering on highly flexible biogas storage power plants will be presented as part of the Northern German Biogas Industry Meeting at the Deula-Halle in Rendsburg. A hybrid press event will take place starting at 9:20 a.m.

The study provides key insights for the current policy discussions on the EEG 2027 and the StromVKG. Key findings of the study include:

12.6 GW of secured renewable reserve capacity could be provided by existing facilities by 2030—without the need to build new large-scale power plants.

The economic benefits amount to 7.8 billion euros per year, compared to subsidy costs of no more than 5.3 billion euros per year.

Furthermore, the economic damage caused by dependence on fossil natural gas during the crisis years 2022 to 2025 is estimated at 75 to 235 billion euros.
