On September 28, the 9th Hydrogen Industry Dialogue was hosted by the Chair of Energy Process Engineering at FAU. The format, organized by ENERGIEregion Nürnberg as part of the Hydrogen Metropolitan Region hy+, regularly brings together representatives at executive and management level from industry, the energy sector, academia, and regional institutions.
Nora Elhaus gave an expert presentation on the role of hydrogen as seasonal storage in the energy system. The focus was on the question of where hydrogen can be used effectively in an energy system increasingly based on renewable energy. While battery storage primarily bridges shorter periods, hydrogen can contribute in particular to securing supply during longer periods of low wind and solar generation. At the same time, green hydrogen will remain a scarce and comparatively expensive resource for the foreseeable future. Its applications therefore lie primarily in areas where direct electrification reaches its limits – for example, in parts of industry and long-distance logistics, as well as in long-term energy storage.
Following the presentation and discussion, Maximilian Weitzer guided the participants through the Chair and provided insights into current research activities and experimental facilities. The afternoon concluded with further professional exchange and networking.
