At the Leipzig Future Forum Biogas 2026 on October 6, around 150 representatives from industry practice, the energy sector, academia, and politics came together at Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig. Topics included the future role of biogas, flexibilization, and new marketing models.

On behalf of the Chair of Energy Process Engineering at FAU, Nora Elhaus gave an expert presentation on biogas storage power plants and their contribution to the future energy system. One focus was on the question of how flexibly operated biogas plants can contribute to securing supply during longer periods of low wind and solar generation. Existing plants offer considerable potential for greater flexibility – provided that sufficiently large gas storage facilities are created in addition to additional capacity.

With regard to EEG 2027, the discussion therefore focused on how the framework conditions for greater flexibilization could be designed. From the Chair’s perspective, the planned auction volumes for biogas should be increased and additional incentives should be created for the development of storage capacity. The aim is to give greater consideration to security of supply and resilience as wind and solar energy continue to expand.
