Sector coupling between the hydrogen and water sectors is not only one of the key themes of the “Kläffizienter” project, but was also a central topic at the hydrogen conference held on 7 October 2026 in Sonneberg. For the fourth time, h2well Innovationsmanagement and HySON e.V., together with the DWA-Landesverband Sachsen/Thüringen and the DVGW-Landesgruppe Mitteldeutschland, organised such a conference, bringing together participants from academia and industry.

In his presentation, Constantin Heim from the Chair of Energy Process Engineering introduced the “Kläffizienter” research project, which investigates the production of biomethane from hydrogen and sewage gas. The focus was on the simulation-based analysis and optimisation of integrating such a process into existing wastewater treatment plant energy systems.

Of particular interest were the insights into the research of the other speakers, whose research topics are closely related to this, such as the production of hydrogen and the use of oxygen from electrolysis at wastewater treatment plant.
